rappelling in blue john canyonBluejohn Canyon is our most physically demanding canyoneering adventure offered. Those who question if they are up to this challenge should first begin on a more moderate route. Expect unrelenting slots, potholes, down climbing, and sheer drops where rappelling is needed.

This fun technical slot canyon in the Robbers Roost has some of the best deep narrows anywhere. The canyon is named for a semi-notorious old west outlaw that used to hide here from the law. John Griffith had one brown eye and one blue eye that earned him his nickname Bluejohn.

We begin our trip in the East and West forks of the canyon system. Three 70 foot rappels and 9 hours of sustained canyoneering make for an action-packed day. The East fork of Bluejohn has the longest swirling narrows, and can be completely dry or filled with water.

The climb out of the West fork leads us to our overnight 4X4 camp-out. Guides prepare a western style meal while you relax around camp.

After a full breakfast, we shoulder packs and head into the lower narrows, also known as the Gauntlet. Massive chock stones obstruct the canyon as we drop into possibly the most exquisite fluted narrows. A sheer pour off awaits us at the end of the narrows. We rope up and drop into the lush grotto bellow us.

The remainder of the day is enjoyable desert hiking at the bottom of Horseshoe Canyon. We will pass some of the most significant rock art panels to be found in North America on our way out of the canyon system. Once on top we meet up with our 4x4 and begin the drive back to Moab.
