Island in the Sky
The Island in the Sky mesa rests on sheer sandstone cliffs between the Colorado and Green Rivers. Towering vistas reach deep into Canyonland's remote wilderness. Below the mesa edge is the White Rim formation, a continuous sandstone bench 1,000 feet above the rivers and 1,000 feet below the mesa top. The White Rim loops around the Island in the Sky for 100 miles and provides spectacular views of Canyonlands National Park.
Not much of this wild America has changed since the prospectors, cowboys, and Native Americans dared to explore and inhabit this corner of Southeastern Utah. Talus slopes, vast basins, soaring buttes, and shadowed mesas create a wilderness of rock. Desert big horn sheep favor the rocky ledges along the pinion-juniper forests.
Travel around the Island in the Sky is rugged. The trails are primitive, and roads are mostly unpaved. Steep switchbacks descend from the top of the Island mesa to the White Rim and then down to the Colorado River. The Island in the Sky is the most convenient district of Canyonlands National Park to visit in a short period of time from the Moab area.
